Winter
Newsletter
Winter
months are such a busy time at school.
We are reading for Reading Counts.
This is a program in which students read books at their level and take a
quiz on the computer. When they pass
the test, they are awarded points. We
like to do this in small groups so we can discuss the book as we read. Many students are also participating in Book
It. This program promotes reading as a
leisure activity. There are so many
good books out there, and it’s just a matter of finding the right one to make
you a life-long reader. Our students
are enjoying reader’s theatre. In this
activity, the students are given play parts to read aloud. No props are necessary, but students must
read with fluency and the right amount of emotion to make it interesting.
Our
writing skills are being sharpened by weekly spelling activities, journaling
and formal writing, such as short reports.
When we journal it is always fun to share our thoughts by presenting to
the group. This is also great practice
in public speaking.
Math
involves lots of problem solving! This
seems simple, but then we explain what we did and why we did it. We will also be reviewing money and telling
time. Fractions, geometry, probability,
measurement and basic operations will be done throughout the next few
months.
Parents,
you are to be thanked for all the help you give your child at home, whether it’s
reviewing for a test, going over their planner, or simply discussing school
with your child. They know school is
important to you. I am so pleased with
your support. Feel free to contact me
over any concerns you have, big or small.
Thanks,
Mrs.
