Ag Exploration
Prerequisites: None Length: semester Grade level: 8
This is an exploratory course to introduce students to the agricultural industry. Students will learn what agriculture is, why it is important to everyone, and how parts of the industry are interconnected. Students will also learn about the National FFA Organization, the intracurricular organization affiliated with agricultural education. Students will also perform many “mini-units,” including dairy, crops, livestock, wildlife, food safety, horticulture, shop safety, and woodworking. Students are strongly encouraged to join the local FFA chapter and are eligible to receive the Discovery FFA Degree.
Ag Orientation
Prerequisites: None Length: year Grade level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Credit: one Maximum enrollment: 18
This class is designed to be an overview of a variety of topics. Subjects include forestry, soil, crops, wildlife, safety, machinery, companion animals, and woodworking. Students will be introduced to record keeping and FFA. Students are strongly encouraged to join the local FFA chapter and are eligible to receive the Greenhand FFA Degree.
Ag Science
Prerequisites: Ag Orientation Length: year Grade level: 10, 11, 12 Credit: one Maximum enrollment: 19
This secondary agriculture course focuses on the science of the agriculture industry. The course is divided into two topics: Environmental science during fall semester and Animal science during spring semester. Topics include soil, water, weather, Illinois landscapes, habitat management, alternative energy sources, nutrition, reproduction, parasitology, disease, and anatomy/physiology. Students will work heavily through experiments and the scientific method, and all students are required to desigh, execute, and exhibit a science experiment in the FFA Science Fair. Ag Science will count as a science credit to meet graduation requirements, but NOT for college admission. Students may be eligible to receive the Chapter FFA Degree |
