 Language Arts

We have been doing a short author study on Patricia Polacco.  Students have gotten to know her a little better by visiting www.patriciapolacco.com .  Besides reading the picture books she has written and illustrated, students will be creating a “Treasure Box” of her books, writing about special events in their lives, creating eggs that will tie to kindness, and eventually writing a letter to Patricia that will actually be sent to her.  Your child might have mentioned that we made “Thunder Cake” after reading Polacco’s story Thunder Cake.  The students thought their cake was delicious, even if the secret ingredient was tomatoes!

Math

Students are finishing up a unit on data collection and probability.  They have been completing surveys, tallying information, and creating bar graphs and pictographs to display the information.  We even got to play our own version of “Battleship” to explore ordered pairs.

Our next unit will be multiplication.  Your child will be asked to study their multiplication facts at home so that the facts can be memorized.  Each week students take home a time sheet to be completed for the week and returned the following Monday.  Students will be receiving a weekly grade for the amount of time studied.

Science

3A has just started a unit that focuses on water.  We will be discussing the importance of water, conducting hands-on experiments revealing parts of the water cycle and where water comes from, and learning about water conservation.  I hope your child will be coming home and sharing with you ways to keep water clean and how to stop wasting it.
