Welcome to Mrs.Little’s First Grade

This year is coming to an end.  I have enjoyed teaching your children.

READING-We are beginning our sixth and final book of stories! The first story is a narrative nonfiction about making bluebird houses that are placed in the garden. How appropriate for this time of year to be reading about gardens! We have been discussing different gardens and what kind of gardens they would like to plant. We have been planting seeds, drawing gardens and writing about them.

Our story focuses on r-controlled ar words and the suffix-ly. Our spelling words for the week are ar words. Those words have been sent home to help your child to study them at least 15 minutes every night. We, also, have centers with activities to assist those children who are needing extra help.

MATH-This last quarter will be a review of everything we have covered this year with an emphasis on addition and subtraction facts. Some of the students do not know their facts without counting on objects and/or the fingers. Please continue to encourage your child to study facts. Flashcards can be purchased at The Dollar Tree. This will prepare them for second grade math.

SCIENCE-The children really like doing experiments and unfortunately there isn’t always time to do as many as I would like. However, it is the end of the year so experiments here we come for sure! We will be doing eggexperiments with eyeballs drawn on them checking out what floats and what sinks. Oh, and there is the rubber egg experiment. When the calcium carbonate is eaten out with vinegar, the egg becomes like a rubber ball!

SOCIAL STUDIES-We will be studying about the different habitats and ecosystems of living things.  Perhaps, making our own ecosystems!
