One of the most often asked questions is “What is Title I?”  Title I is a federally funded program for students in grades kindergarten through the fourth grade at our building.  I teach reading skills to the kindergarten through the 4rd grade in small groups of six in my room.  I am also now going into the classroom for the new Reading Block.  Mrs. Demler is my aid this year and helps our students with reading and math.    The teacher and I are partners as we strive to help students of all abilities succeed in learning new reading and math strategies.  Starting in January I  teach strategies to help the 4th graders succeed in their ISAT test taking skills.  We work especially on math problem solving.

I am currently using new research based reading programs to help my students succeed in reading such as the Haggerty Phonics series and the Six Minute Solution for fluency.  I am also doing individual intervention with students and progress monitoring all of my Title I students with the AIMS WEB program weekly and bi-weekly.  My pull out Title I student are also able to use the computer once a week to work on their reading skills with programs such as “Reader Rabbit”, “Reading Blaster”, “Phonics Alive”, and “I Spy” series.

I have experience as a first grade teacher and I started at Colchester teaching reading improvement.  I have my master’s degree in reading and am certified as a Reading Specialist for grades K-12. from Western Illinois University.  I have taught reading graduate classes and was an instructor for the “Meeting the Challenge” statewide reading initiative.  I have also done several presentations around the area and at conferences on making reading come alive through storytelling and reader’s theater.  As you can tell, reading is my passion and I hope to share some of that enthusiasm with my students so that they too will become lovers of books!

HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!  SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!
