Students Observe Constitution Week

During the week of September
12th-16th, students at West Prairie Middle School participated in
many activities in observance of Constitution Week.

In the picture above, students came to school with
a specific color shirt on Friday morning. The 5th grade wore
blue, the 6th and 7th wore white, and the 8th wore blue. In honor of
the American Flag, students and teachers then organized themselves
into a a giant representation.
In addition, the teachers prepared specific
lessons geared towards the constitution, citizenship, and other
aspects of government. These topics included:
Social Studies:
- Worked on the "rights and duties" of citizens.
- Held a discussion concerning constitutional
amendments.
Science:
- Students explored American Symbols, focusing on
the Eagle.
Math:
- Measurement was stressed and the students then
created an American Flag in 8 x 10 paper with the aid of a ruler.
Reading:
- Students read the poem, "the National Anthem."
Student studied each stanza and then answered questions covering
the poem.
English:
- Students completed a 5 paragraph essay on one
of two topics; "What America means to me" and "Why I am proud to
be an American."
Art:
- Students used the internet to research dress
during the colonial times.
Technology:
- Students used the internet to research the Bill
of Rights.
